I am getting ready to install a Sirius Unit in the 987 (
Boxster
). I am posting here, since there seems to be a good collective knowledge of the stereo system in the
Cayman
/
Boxster
, compared to some of the
Boxster
only sites.
I will be using a direct wired FM modulator, which requires FM antenna in and FM antenna out connections of the Motorola type. I have the CDR-24
Bose
Stereo. I know that the FM antenna connection in the 987 is not the "standard" Motorola type. In searching this site and some others, I have concluded that this is the correct type:
BMW European FM Antenna Adapter (40-EU30) Description
or this one from Crutchfield (would need the matching plug as well):
Antenna Adapter OEM male to Motorola female Works with a variety of 1999-up European and American vehicles at Crutchfield.com
Can anybody who has done a satellite system in the 987 (or another aftermarket install) confirm that this is correct? For some reason, none of the websites positively identify these connectors as the correct ones for 2005+ Boxsters (or any pcar for that matter).
Thanks
The kit in your first link is all you need for your install (PN 40-EU30), definitley not the one they specify for 996\
986
which was part number 40-VW30. Crutchfield sells the two parts separately for ~$20 each; they're part numbers #12040EU20 and #12040EU10.

Hi there, I installed an FM modulator in my 2007
Boxster
just a few weeks ago. You can actually pick up the adapters you need locally at a Best Buy for even cheaper - $11/each is what I paid. They're not sold in the store, but rather in the installers booth, they'll grab the two cables you need, and they'll look identical to the ones in your first link. FYI, I'm pretty happy with the FM Modulator I put in there, it's definitely the cheapest way to get my iPod connected to my radio, and the sound quality is pretty good. PM me if you have any questions when installing.
Other wiring supplies?
What other supplies/tools should I have on hand before I begin the install? I will have some of the standard wiring connectors and a crimping tool. Do I need a special fuse tap to pull power from the fuse box?
ejmc11--which modulator did you use? I plan on using the one that comes with the Sirius Starbase unit.
TIA, socalsharky
socalsharky, you don't
need
a special kind of fuse tap, I just reccomend using the basic
radio shack one
with a crimped quick disconnect.
You will need a phillips head screw driver to get the plastic fuse panel off, in order to remove the carpeted piece around it, so you can hide cables better. And you will need Torx T30, T25, and T20 to remove the headunit... really that is it. Check our articles section for headunit removal and the article on hardwiring radar detectors for fuse tap instructions and reccomended fuses for a switched install.
Use the FM modulator built into the starbase because it's controlled through the starbase display, other FM modulators will require you to run a switch somewhere into the interior.

Gotta love it!

Kevin,
I am in fact... you should see my basement, you can't even walk through it. But I don't have the $$$ to have all the electronics I want so I live vicariously by helping others with their electronics
