Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My tiptronic C4 996 will occassionaly not start in park, when turning the key we it allows you to go to the cranking position but nothing happens, on trying a second time it will not even allow the key to get to the cranking position. If you swith the gear lever to neutral it will start immediately. I have also noticed that the gear shifter seems to be getting stiffer, do you think this is all linked? More importantly do you think it is covered by my Posrch assist warrenty? Thanks for any help

POST 2Original post

it's either the cable that requires replacing or the other thing we used to get on tiptonics was the linkage on the gearbox would rust up and stiffen up and not going fully into park , repair for that was remove clean up apply a bit of antiseize and refit, :thumb: hope this helps

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for that, sounds like a good posibility it's one of those as another problem I have been having is that it won't let me have the key back unless I push the gear lever hard forward. Do you think it could still be one of those issues even if it will let the key go to the crank position?? Many Many Thanks

POST 4Original post

Sounds to me like the part in the steering column is failing. It takes 3 inputs - gearstick, steering lock and key position. If you spray WD-40 around the key, so that it runs down the barrel, that sometimes fixes the problem temporarily. It is like a great big mechanical lock and if the inputs are getting confused (dirty/age), it will result in the experiences you are seeing. It's about £250 including labour to replace and is not covered under warranty. I'll see if I can pull out the part (I had mine replaced about 4 months ago). Mine failed around 40k miles/5 years. Cheers.

POST 5Original post

PS - After the adjustment cable has been checked, you'll need to check the steering lock. Item P996.347.017.07 is the replacement (£66.98), the rest was around labour. Cheers.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the advice. Whats the best way to get at the linkage, from under the car I guess or can you access it from the panel above??

POST 7Original post

under the motor mate on the driver side no access through inside of car...
