Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have done DME programming and swapped used DME's from the junk yard into customers cars, but was using Genuine PIWIS II , not a China Clone.....
Leading evidence: 'Replace used dme's' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean power source/charger, and be carefull' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Make sure you have plenty of voltage, 13+volts, using a clean power source/charger, and be carefull....

Can I change the DME via VT4G to get my 996 reliably back on the road?

I have tried to change from US to RoW prior on my existing DME, but it always seems to fail in the PIWIS 3 VM.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is a continuation of my prior thread
2002 C2 Cabriolet Won't Start, Fuse C2 Pops, All Conditions
where I had to replace the wiring harness on my 2002 C2.
I have a newer DME that should be functional, but it is for a 2004 Boxster S. The part numbers match and I have the IPAS codes for both my DME and the "new" DME.
I have a PIWIS 3 VM and a Tabscan PT3G, but am fine with paying for a block of time for VT4G on PPN.

Can I change the DME via VT4G to get my 996 reliably back on the road?
As of right now, I am unable to program any DMEs using VT4G.
With the Tabscan PT3G I can interrogate all the modules and seem to be able to do everything, but when it comes to programming the DMEs, it immediately fails.
Any tips/help in Middle Georgia?

You definatly don't want the PIWIS to fail while doing any DME programming...
I have a Genuine SamTec PIWIS II interface , but with a Clone Software, but haven't done any DME programming...
Make sure you have plenty of voltage, 13+volts, using a clean power source/charger, and be carefull....
I appreciate the insight. I've tried both the clone PIWIS and the official PIWIS via PPN, maybe the Tabscan adapter just can't do it? The PIWIS indicates that voltage is fine.
Placed PIWIS 3 in Engineering mode for v38 and still no joy. It appears to start for about 30 seconds, but produces no progress bar and then says Programming Not Successful. Extended information does show that the DME is placed into Flash Mode and if I attempt to try again the VIN is populated with a generic value.
Im assuming that I cant enter engineering mode on VT4G.
