Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all its been a while since I have posted on here but the car has now become sick and needs serious medical attention. Yesterday I tried to open my drivers window. The window started to go down. It had opened about 6 inches when I heard a crunch. At first I thought the glass had shattered but that wasn't the case. I can hear the window mechanism moving inside the door but the glass is not moving. I have to open and close the window by hand. Has anyone had a similar problem? I have to take a look at this as soon as possible as the car isn't secure. Does anyone know how to remove the door panel?

POST 2Original post

There is a cable that links the window motor to the glass. This cable is prone to snapping, which both of mine did, which sounds like a cracking sound. Symptoms of mine are same as yours, bar the crunching noise. This cable is classed as a consumable / non-warranty item by Porsche (under the old scheme). Dont ask me why, I fought very hard with Porsche GB and eventually they offered to replace it goodwill, but I had to fight. If you replace it yourelf (I havent a clue how) note that there is a plastic membrane in there that seals off the outside world from the inside of the door panel. You need to replace this membrane as it has been designed to rip if you have to repair anything inside the door (how helpful). IIRC OPC charge c.£210 to repair this, but I cant remember if that is just parts or labour as well. Edited to add: When mine went I was able to manually lift up the glass so from the outside it looked normal. Not the safest in the world, but my only option.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for that. I does make sense having read your explaination and also having looked at a schematic of the window mechanism it sounds highly likely to be the mechanism and not the motor. I have posted a link of the schematic if anyone is interested. http://www.autoatlanta.com/model/996-99-05/804-30.htm I phoned up porsche stratford this morning. Window mechanism 996 542 076 04 is £111.34 incl vat. and the membrane is £39.42 incl vat. Will pick these parts up on Saturday. Im still not sure how the door interior panel comes off. I cant find any screws or screw covers anywhere. I have tried giving it a tug from the bottom but it doesnt feel like its clipped in, it feels much more well attached than if it was clipped in

POST 4Original post

you can tell if its the cables as you'll hear a crunching noise when trying to work it..... the door card comes off via a series of screws hidden. i behind cover above interior opener, second is a bit further down the grab handle behind a cover, you also have 1 4mm allen screw behind the airbag sign which just needs gently levering off, last one is in the cubby on the door if it has is a plastic phillips screw.... also flip off the little black triangle cover on mirror, pulls out at bottom and slides up of hook.... the rest is just pull.... :thumb:
