Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

So I read all the reviews about the Dension unti and decided to go ahead and do it. I am also looking forward hooking up satellite radio. So I got the unit, and went and got it installed, but when I went to pick up the car, the guys said they ran into a problem. My car was not equipped with the cd changer inputs. Did anyone else have this problem? It sounds like everyone else's car was already set up for the changer, and you simply run the dension unit through that, but my car doesn't have one! So for now, the unit is in working fine, but there is no way to input it into the radio. I'm kinda frustrated, and going to the dealer Monday to figure out what I'm gonna need to be set up for a changer.

POST 2Original post

We need a few more details. Do you have Bose? PCM? My dealer had to enable mine in the CDR24. All they did was turn it on in the head unit. The only "input" needed is a fiber connection on the most bus (which is really both an input and and output since it is a ring). If it is hooked up to the fiber, and enabled in the head unit, it should work. The only issue I could see is that if you have the base sound package, it may not have the fiber run to the boot. Mine did not have the fiber that Ken's did from the article and I had to get to it behind the vacuum booster.

POST 3Original post

I have the CDR-24, with Bose....I've been to the dealer once to have the radio flashed, and even when I was there, they commented on the fact that I was missing a piece that other cars have had. So I guess I need to see about getting the fiber optic "input".....I was hoping that all of this was going to be easier.

POST 4Original post

If you have Bose, then you have what you need. Take a look at this picture: You can see behind the booster a connection where 2 fiber lines join. If you disconnect those, you can plug the Dension in there. Basically you are looking at the joint between the CDR24 and the Bose amp, which is down near the emergency kit. I'm pretty sure that it isn't optional to have that line. Now, I will tell you that it was a real b1tch to tap into the line and I had to break the clip to get to it. I think it some cars, there is additional wiring that makes it easier.

POST 5Original post

If you have the Bose then tapping into the fiber optic ring is even easier. Just disconnect the fiber optic plug from the Bose amp hidden behind the tool/tire repair compartment in the front trunk. Next, disconnect the input cable from that plug. Just follow the instructions included with the Dension unit for how to properly unlatch these connections. Don't force it, when you press on the latch the cable will pull out nice and smooth. Next, use one of the splicing adapters that came with the Dension to connect one of the two cables that also came with the Dension to this cable and route that to the input side of the plug for the Dension unit. Use the other length of cable that came with the Dension to go from the output side of the Dension plug back to the input side of the Bose plug replacing the one you just disconnected and spliced. There is plenty of fiber optic cable supplied with the Dension to route all of this neatly behind the trunk liner and up to the charcoal cannister where you can mount your Dension unit. I used some industrial strength velcro to secure the Dension to the flat part of the cannister. You can also tap into the power plug for the CD changer that is on the passenger side of the trunk next to the charcoal cannister. This plug is unused and just laying there all available and such. Use a volt meter to find which wires give you power. I even mounted the iPod on the charcoal cannister so nothing is visible. Good luck. Mine's been working for a week now and it's great.

POST 6Original post

Dension Nightmare! :argue: I'm kinda ticked right now. I went and got a cd changer prep kit installed cause my dealership said that a flash of the system wouldn't work with out it. Now that that's in, I had the installer put everything in, and he didn't even end up using the CD prep kit cable. Still no worky. So I went back to the dealership to have the reflash, and now there is no sound. Radio comes on, but nothing. So I've spent two different days doing installs, way too much time and money, and I can't even listen to the radio. This same installer has done other Boxsters and had them work fine. Is there any chance that the dealership could be messing up the radio when they go to flash it? Is anyone on here an installer themselves so that I could give my installer a contact number of someone to shoot questions to? I'm not so good with all of the technical stuff, so that is why I took it to a professional, but even they are kinda stumped right now as to why this thing isn't working. Has anyone been able to get a hold of the guys at Dension directly for technical support? Thanks....

POST 7Original post

sounds fishy to me. I chose to pay a professional to do my install, but I sincerely believe I could have done it myself w/o too much time. As I recall, you basically take the cable that goes to the Nav and put it into the Dension and then connect the Dension to the Nav...

POST 8Original post

That sounds familiar to me. When I first installed the Dension (before having the dealer flash the system) the radio would turn on and tune in stations but there was no sound. I carefully went through my fiber connections to make sure they were tight and viola! suddenly there was sound. It seems one of the connections from the HU to the Bose amp was not complete and so the amp was getting no signal to output to the speakers. Have your installer make sure the connections are tight.

POST 9Original post

Well, I finally got it working...... I had version 1.0, and my installer had version 1.05. They swapped units and everything worked fine. I'm not sure if it was as simple as that, or if the installer just wanted the sale, but I not have a working unit with both satellite radio and my Ipod. Love the both of them. Granted, I spent about $1000 to get this hooked up, and I can't say that is was worth that....but I still love having the both of them.
