I would recommend buying with your eyes open, get a PPI, and as I say to many who ask for advice: a good/reliable car today is the reflection of a lifetime of TLC and investment by previous owners.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just glancing through this 996 forum i can see lots of issues being reported with the 996.
Someone said on here, its only issues people speak about so thats why it looks bad and its actually not that bad.
But i cant help but think that there are a good variety of issues with the 996 and its not something which i would expect for a £65k car and in particular its not something which i would expect with a Porsche.. its more of a TVR thing!! Am i asking for too much?
thats not particulary nice. did you get out on the wrong side of the bed?
i'm expressing a serious concern that any buyer would experience. if he/she logs on here.. reads the posts.. then.. all he/she would think is what i highlighted above.
if you find my concerns boring, then i would suggest you dont read my posts. its that simple.
I took the liberty to scan quicky through the past 5 pages and this is a list of issue that have arisen. Seems like a lot.

1) Forums are more commonly used to find out how to solve problems, hence the large number of posts that are scaring you (although this form does have a fair amount of drooling and praising our cars)
2) People who use forums tend to be enthusiasts who demand their cars are in perfect condition, hence they correct the tinyest of rattles, polish them until they drop, and kiss the exhaust pipe regularly. (However - Wattie is a good example of someone who loves his car, but still drives it loads, doesnt worry about tiny stone chips and doesnt go for the warranty - he's that hardcore).
3) Performance cars push things to the limit and in doing so they push engineering and material performance, thats how they entertain us and go so bloody fast. Thats also why components occasionally fail - the cars arent designed to last 10years without any failures, the cost of components & design would be too high and no one would buy them.
Buy the best car you can afford, get a PPI done, go for the warranty, but most of all - just drive the bloody thing and enjoy every single time you press the throttle or decide you cant go that fast round a bend but do it anyway.
Easy guys, we've all had a drink
Ameer, you're looking at potentially purchasing a high performance sports car, there will be issues, end of story. No car is perfect no matter how much money you spend. You just have to way up the benefits.
I love mine, I even ignore all the posts about upgrading the stereo. I just don't turn it on and drive with the window open smiling
thats good advise...
i suppose i should consider the 996 to be as good as the tvr t350, and i suppose i should be ready to pay £15k more for the 996 but in return i would get abs and power steering and airbags but also expect the same number of issues with it as the tvr!
its not putting me off as i like the shape and engine in the car! i`m just disappointed to read all these issues.
my friend has a tvr sag, he loves it.. despite all the issues. this is essentially what i feel about the 996. i love it but its seems the car is not as bullet proof as it should be!
Ill vouch for that - I still wouldn't part mine for anything... even with my recent post. The driving experiance is amazing.
Dont forget, the 911 is a supercar, no doubt about it and a car that spends so much time on the road (esp compared to most other supercars), naturally a few issues are bound to arise.
The ownership usaully sweetens most bills and thus im sure as many guys here will say even with the issues that may arise, most would still not part with their 911.
Ameer,
The 996 is no less reliable than a BMW or Mercedes of a similar value.
Early 996s are now 9 years old, so you need to compare apples with apples.
During the 9 year lifetime of a car (as is represented by the variety of cars owned on 911uk), it is possible you may encounter the list of problems listed.
Have you owned a car, since new, for 9 years? I'm sure you will be able to list as long a list of problems, if not even more.
Thankfully, no one experiences ALL these problems at the same time (unless you are a TVR owner  )
Relative to other £65-75k sports cars offering the same level of performance as a 911, I would be VERY surprised if there were another [non-Porsche] car that didn't suffer the same or even greater number of faults.
Your post suggests unwarranted scaremongering which is why you have received some of the response you have. The fact is that 996s were generally a very reliable car, if not Toyota reliable. But a Toyota would never give you the same level of performance. People forget that these were £65-75k supercars when they were released, and they do cost a fair bit to maintain. They may cost the same as a 1 year old BMW today, but that doesn't mean they cost the same to maintain and run.
I would recommend buying with your eyes open, get a PPI, and as I say to many who ask for advice: a good/reliable car today is the reflection of a lifetime of TLC and investment by previous owners. At the same token, buy a neglected car, and expect the worst.
Ameer,
Im stuck trying to think of a car that never has an issue. I've had a 5 series BMW front axel snap on me at 70mph in the middle of France. My 89 190 E automatic stalled in the middle of traffic and failed to start. Head gasket blew on Renault 5 15 years ago.
Have had the 996 and covered more miles in it than all the above, at an average speed far in excess of them too, so far nothing has failed apart from a battery going flat....once. Thats my issue so far.
I don't want to come across as snooty but if you are worried about the financial impact of repairs and won't get the warranty, then maybe you should be looking at something else.
   funnni guy - good response.
i suppose thats essentially it. its a car and it should be expected to have issues at some point!
not sure if its a super car though.
