Replacing CR-11 Becker Stereo & 6 Disc CD with Grand Pri

Hi My old stereo is the CR-11 tape player with 6 cd in the front boot. I wan to upgrade it! and include Ipod What is this MOST thing that i keep hearing about, if I buy the Becker Grand Prix which has been recommended, do I need to avoid this MOST thing? The other thing is I keep seeing CDR-22/23 radios on ebay, can I just buy one of those and plumb it in, some come with CD changers too? My 996 1998 came with the code 490 option Sound System pack whatever that is! Thanks Guys. Kind Regards Edward

MOST is the fibre-optic bus used on post 2003 cars, and be very glad you haven't got it if you are thinking of upgrading! The Becker Grand Prix is an excellent choice if you want the "factory look". I've heard of several people who have fitted it and are very pleased. The 490 sound package is the Harman system, with 6x40W amplifier mounted in the luggage compartment. The Grand Prix is almost, but not quite, plug-and-play. You need to do a small mod to the wiring to provide a switched supply to the amp. HTH

radio upgrade the most thing you mention is applicable to 996 turbos and most 2003 ish 996/986 models and is a little data bus for the radio and its componentsand also a fibre optic signal transfer system,it pertains to the way the radio code and information is exchanged between control units. basically the newer radios i.e cdr23 has no radio code as such,its matched to a specific chassis number. when you switch the unit on at any time the radio communicates with other control units on the vehicle and makes sure the information matches,if it does the radio works , you never need to type in a code when you disconnect the battery, units like this wont work in early models such as yours, unless you install all of its components! stick to a cdr21 with an additional auto changer in the front and unless you want to bankrupt yourself and install the complete pcm one or two option. their are specialist units out their to integrate ipods and the like with the radio system ,although it would be easier to buy an generic sony/alpine etc with this function and a built in cd/mp3 etc as this will be easy to mate up to your existing option fit amp. best regards c

Re: Replacing CR-11 Becker Stereo & 6 Disc CD with Grand Ted, The becker units work just fine - GP, Cascade and Cascade pro, they just slot straight in, and as richard says just need one wire in the loom to get the existing amp up and running. The additional iPOD cable for these units is about £60 - you will loose the CD stack functionality though but you do have a single disc option on the unit itself. I thought the 490 option was made by nokia? Don't worry about MOST as is not applicable on the MY of your car. - Simon

Re: Replacing CR-11 Becker Stereo & 6 Disc CD with Grand I have the 490 code and my amp is the Nokia in the luggage comp.I got rid of the Sony CD changer when I fitted an Alpine unit[single CD] with bluetooth and Ipod conection :thumb: TB

Maybe 490 option code was just an upgraded sound system from basic? TB

I see it will take away my 6 disc stacker, hmm.. i would like an ipod though! decisions! Kind Regards Edward
