The auto-dimming 993 mirrors work as well - I put one in my 996 with great success but do not know if the corresponding wires match up for the rain sensing/reverse gear functions (I replaced a manual mirror).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My new to me 01 TT has the auto-dimming rear view mirror and the rain sensor which I think is part of the windshield mount. Problem is it has the fogged/blurred problem which I believe may be somewhat common. I checked with Suncoast Porsche and the replacement mirror is $376! Ouch. Is there any other options that will work? It seems from reading some older post there may be a corresponding Audi mirror. I just want to make sure that the replacement will attach to the existing windshield mount. Also does anyone know the proper procedure for removing the exisiting mirror? Do the electronics plug in the mirror or up in the overhead console area? Thanks. Keith

POST 2Original post

Sorry I wish I had seen your post earlier as I just deleted an ended Ebay auction for a self-dimming mirror for $110 that did not sell. But it was for an Audi mirror that is supposed to be the same or interchangable for the Porsche one. I know there have been some threads on this mirror here or on some of the other sites, and the Audi version is alot less expensive I think. You might want to do some searches. The wire for the mirror plugs into the overhead console.

POST 4Original post

1998+ Audi and Porsche mirrors are inter-changable. I put a auto-dim mirror in my 2002 996 that was from my wife's Audi, and it works like a champ.

POST 6Original post

Yes, she was, she wanted a mirror with a compass on it, so I got that for her car, and took the non-compass mirror and put it in my 996.

As Paul Harvey used to say .... "now you (I) know the rest of the story!"

POST 8Original post

I want to steal the mirror from my wifes Allroad! But.... that would be a bad move.

POST 9Original post

my wife's car has gone thru 4 mirrors in 3 years.... some reasone they dont hold up to parking lot posts I have taken to buying them in "bulk" now......

POST 11Original post

The auto-dimming 993 mirrors work as well - I put one in my 996 with great success but do not know if the corresponding wires match up for the rain sensing/reverse gear functions (I replaced a manual mirror). To remove, wrap a rag around the stalk to the windshield, take a pair of pliers and twist - it will pop off at about 90*.

Not a cheap option, but you could aways go with something like this, the Escort SmartMirror with GPS and Bluetooth:

Thanks, but despite all of my boat maintenance, I still haven't gotten around to making the mirror in the "head," auto-dimming!

POST 15Original post

Keith- There are two differant self dimming mirrors for that car which I have spent a great deal of time sourcing. The differance is that one is the factory option & the other is the tequipment add on which may also include the tequipment rain sensor. Be carefull. They mount differantly!!! If you have the factory option with rain sensor then the rain sensor is most likely in the center of the mount and can be seen from outside the windshield. In other words it appears to be part of the mount as opposed to being next to the mount. That version slides down from its mount. DO NOT TWIST IT OR YOU WILL BREAK THE WINDSHIELD!! Take the two piece plastic cover off of it & you will see the brass clips on the sides. Gently lift up on the bottom & pull the mirror down. Check your ins. policy before commencing. The other version is the Porsche aftermarket type & replaces the factory non dimming mirror & uses the same twist mount described by others above & in various threads. Sometimes you will have a factory option mirror but with the tequipment rainsensor which is always mounted next to the mirror. I may have an extra mirror for the factory type. PM me if interested.

I know this thread is 7 years old, but I have a repair option for what it's worth. radar-mirror.com will repair ANY auto-dimming rear-view mirror for $99 (you have to remove it and ship it to them and wait for it to return, though). I used them for my BMW M5 and plan to use them again for the 996 Turbo because it has the same issue. EDIT: Video on the fix they do: You Tube

POST 19Original post

Is auto dimming really worth it? I paid like $20 for a replacement non-dimming version and have no problem raising my arm up to flip the little manual switch.

Guess it depends if you're planning to keep everything original or not...

POST 21Original post

I chose to send my mirror with exact same problem here: http://sybesmas.com/site/ Should get back by the end of this week. Can provide an update. Total cost ~$110.
