Read evidence and context

Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello to all on the 996 forum. I have owned a 2004 C4S for about eight months now, purchased from OPC Exeter with 18K on the clock. I knew something about the cars before I purchased, I had owned a 944s in the eighties and always aspired to the 911. However, I find myself unsure about things and realise how little I do know about the Carrera 4S. From reading the posts it would seem that sharing technical issues, possible expensive faults, is a popular subject for discussion. I have the 111 point check ahead of me so with this in mind I ask. Tiptronic gearbox: this stuck in 3rd (the engine light briefly flashed up on the dashboard) and would not shift no matter what I did, into Manual, stop start, etc. Only after shutting down the car and restarting would the gearbox shift, after which it was fine. This I thought of as, re-booting a computer. Has anyone experienced this before? Front Axle Whine: over 45 mph there is a noticeable noise coming from, what I believe to be, the front axle. It does not get worse no matter how fast you go. Is this normal?

POST 2Original post

Looks like the gearbox went into limp-home mode for some reason. There should be a fault code logged which the dealer can investigate. Front axle whine... not something I've noticed on mine. Are the tyres directional? They're noisier apparently...
