Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi thinkign about a clutch change on my 10 yr old C2. Does it REALLY need a porsche specialist to change the clutch, (whether OPC or Indy), or can a local garage do it? I gather (but do not know from personal experience) that a clutch change is not generally regarded as a highly complicated thing amogst automobile mechanics. I can understand on a relatively new 996 etc that OPC or Indy would be desirable, but my 996 is at Rock bottom price wise! Thoughts please on complexity? Is the RMS seal a complex job also, I gather this is done at the same time as a clutch change?

POST 2Original post

get an indy to do it 911's are still complex for a reason

POST 3Original post

Ditto Sundeep. As you're aware, 911s aren't every day cars by virtue of their engines being in the right place  But only specialists who have worked on such cars previously will know what to do, where to look etc. An ordinary garage may not have worked on a car like this before and wouldn't know how to remedy a weeping gearbox/crankcase etc. ~ Maxie

POST 4Original post

I concur. Pads and discs can be done by any old punter, but any engine stuff get it done by an indy.

POST 6Original post

Most local garages will never have worked on a car with the engine the 'right way round'. Would you want to entrust your P&J to someone who would be doing it for the first time?

POST 7Original post

Get to an indy , as like many say they may scratch there head looking for the engine in a garage, and they may not like getting the clutch cylinder back in the gearbox housing and miss the arm... regards the rms if your changing it their is a special tool for inserting it correctly which indy's will have and along with that what happens if its the int shaft seal leaking and "a garage" just pull it out without timing it up and tensioners still in place? clutches at an indy can;'t be that highly priced can they..

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, this has shown me that there are more complex issues than on a normal car, which I am glad I asked about! Charles Ivey in Fulham charges about £900-£1000 I think they said I know there are cheaper places around I will be going to, Chelsea Carrera for one. Thanks Guys Edward

POST 9Original post

+1 for an indy Edward ,do you actually require a clutch - is it heavy /slipping / have a high bite point? or are you just changing for piece of mind? - Simon

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Simon Charles Ivey have said it will prob last 6 months to a year. It is pretty heavy compared to other (non-Porsche) cars I have driven, but I am not sure how heavy it should be on a 1998 C2 6 speed!! I dont think its slipping particularily, if it lasts 9-12 montsh that would be great budget wise. How heavy (a hard question to answer I realise!) do you think it should be? Edward

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Sundeep, yes I keep hearing that name recomended for service quality AND price time and time again. Sorry I should have said that was a VAT inclusive price the £900 above from CI. Kind Regards Edward

POST 13Original post

edward you are quite right its quite hard to gauge on line - 911 clutch actions are generally heavier than other cars - but go with what your specialist says. \although 6- 12 months will be wholy dependant on how much/hard you drive it. Another sign of a clutch on the way out is the bite point is a lot higher whereas the earlier it bites the better the condition of your clutch. - Simon
