Had the headers and x-pipe first installed with the original mufflers which had the Carnewal modification.

Having a lift makes it easy to spot clean any dirty spots, but trust me the car is far, far from concours clean.

At first I was getting quite a few CEL codes - maybe once every few weeks, so I replaced a couple O2 sensors, that did the trick, now occasionally like you when I'm in a higher gear at lower revs I'll get a code - maybe 3 times so far this year - I carry an OBD code reader like you in the door pocket and just reset it on the spot
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For those keeping score - I lost my bank 2 catalytic converter a few weeks ago. Once I removed the failed cat, it was clear the insert had come loose and was rubbing against the post cat 02 sensor. I decided to take this opportunity to "upgrade".
Got my new FVD Sport Cats installed several days ago. The purchase was smooth - shipping fast and the rennlist discount was a welcome bonus.
The FVD cats are well made and look great. They are a direct bolt in replacement. The only extra hardware I needed was bolts/nuts for attaching the cats to the exhaust manifold as my original cats had permanent studs instead of bolts. Most of the studs snapped off when attempting to remove the original cats. The Dremel with a cut off wheel took care of the rest.
I've put a few hundred miles on the car, and there are no CELs, and the new O2 sensors are working flawlessly.
Here's a picture before re-installing the bumper cover:
Here's a video paired with my Fister exhaust - so you can get a sense of the sound.
For those needing a cost effective cat replacement - and are looking for a bit more "sporting" exhaust note - the FVD 200 cell sport cats are worth a look.
very shiny, what are you using to fend off the accumulated road and track dirt ?
weight difference ? FVD's vs OEM ?
tell us more about the X74,
ya lucky bastige !!
The camera hides the grime. Having a lift makes it easy to spot clean any dirty spots, but trust me the car is far, far from concours clean. I use diluted Simple Green HD and water mostly. Cosmoline is still all over the place. I believe there's no substitute for elbow grease.
Good question on the weight - I bet Rhonda @ FVD could give us exact weight measurements. The factory cats are heavy - and this setup is much lighter. It was easy to lift into place with one hand.
The X74 is the holy grail of 996 bolt in suspension setups. The only downside is there's no way to experience all the car can do...unless you're on the track.
Spoke too soon on the CEL front. Looks like my sensitive post cat O2 sensors don't like the new setup.
Was hoping to not need O2 extenders - it kind of feels like a hack - but will likely go that route to keep the CEL at bay.
I get CELs sometimes with my Fabspeed cats.
I just keep the code reader in the door storage area and if I get one I clear it at a stop light. Sure it's a hack but the system works and sounds great otherwise.
Most of the time when it does happen is when I'm in a higher gear at lower RPMs. So my car likes to rev, that's not a bad thing!
I think the only route to insure you pass SMOG and visual is to have carnewal put in the inserts into OE canisters, or get OE canisters. I went through 4 SETS of catalytic converters.
I swap out the cats to hollowed cats for track events as it's the track events and full throttle that kills catalytics and I never get CELs, even with the hollowed catalytics.
Just look at the size of the converters. No wonder they can't keep the emission levels to what the engine is looking for. Converters like these are a downgrade not an upgrade. Good luck getting more than 2 years of daily driving out of them. They hardly have enough "brick" in them to pass when they are new. What do you thing will happen when they start to age? And they will age extremely fast. Noway it will last half the time the OEs did. Putting O2 extenders IS a hack and so is constantly resetting the ECU.
I sometimes have the same issue with my Fabspeed cats
I have had them for a few years now, along with Tubi headers and mufflers

I definitely can vouch for the improved performance and better sound
Your setup looks awesome ... and super clean! Nice to hear the feedback on those. The finishing quality of the x-pipes looks very nice, good quality stuff, as should be expected at this price level.
I have been looking also at FVD for upgrades for the exhaust, headers and the x-pipe. At the end I chose to upgrade my exhaust to sports headers and 200 cell x-pipe from an independent exhaust manufacturer. Found a company that makes some very nice stuff, especially the welding is super quality for a reasonable price. Maybe not so glossy and polished as FVD and others.
Had the headers and x-pipe first installed with the original mufflers which had the Carnewal modification. The switch from stock to headers and x-pipe resulted in a very loud and droning sound. Which made that I took the plunge and replaced them with the Cargraphic Sound mufflers.
The sound is very nice. Not too loud when cruising but very pronounced when touching the throttle a bit more. Inside the car the Cargraphic mufflers have much less low frequency background noise then the OEM mufflers with Carnewal mod. So also there a big improvement in comfort at cruising speeds and more pronounced engine sound on more spirited driving.
My apologies to all of you my car is not as clean as topic starter's car
No idea what lift it is. It is the shop where I bought the Cargraphic mufflers.i did not further pay much attention to it. Why do you ask? In the photo there are no lift parts visible I think. The beam in the back on the right side is from the building and is way more in the back.
For the headers I decided to do some hit and miss via e-bay. I ordered a set and then evaluated build quality and welding in order to decide to keep or return. The 4th set I ordered looked very well made and solid.
I then decided to also order the cats there.
Here
is the link. The fit on the headers was spot on without any readjusting. It has a larger bore diameter and came with an adapter to taper down to the OEM diameter \of the mufflers. This was a little bit tricky as they needed some more of the exhaust kit as usual to make it airtight. Optically with the additional adapter it looks also less bling. They also provide a x-pipe with normal diameter. As well as normal cats.
I have FVD 100 cell x-pipe cats.... amazing product! they are like increasing the volume on your car.... if you had drone it will magnify it... the source of drone is a bad exhaust - I have PSE so no issues at all - at any rpm -
FVD makes a solid product - highly recommend them.
