Like many other contributors, my now-13 year old
Cayman
's built in
TPMS
has been a constant source of irritation. A year ago, tired of false warnings that can't be removed from the dash display, I purchased new
tires
and had new sensors installed. The sensors worked for about 6 months, then one started transmitting incorrect data, back to the dash warning messages again.
Many people have asked about disabling the onboard
Porsche
TPMS
display and warning system, and the general consensus has been a trip to the dealer and very expensive reprogramming (if they can even do it), or use of the "Durametric"
Porsche
-specific diagnosis tool. At $500-600, the Durametric is hardly going to be a regular feature of the average one-
Porsche
-per-garage owner's toolbox.
Then I stumbed onto a unique offering on eBay: A VW dealer who RENTS the Durametric and cable for a short duration for just $59.99:
🔥 10 Day Rental, Porsche Durametric Professional Cable w/ Software 1996 & up | eBay
You pay a substantial deposit to insure return, and the unit comes to you with free shipping and a free return shipping label. You are allowed 10 days to keep the unit. Once returned, the deposit is quickly refunded.
Then I found an article, on this forum which gives great details on making the necessary changes to disabling the TPMS warning system with the Durametric unit:
Disable/Enable TPMS with Durametric Pro
The reset process (after disconnecting the TPMS control unit inside the "frunk") took me about 5 minutes max, and PRESTO.. my Cayman now has no knowledge of a TPMS, and no warning messages displayed.
Then I purchased an external TPMS system from Amazon .

A Tymate brand at only $54.99 which includes a solar-charged dashtop unit (easily held in place with velcro or?) that constantly displays pressure and temperature for each of the external sensors (provided) which screw right on to the valve stem. The system works flawlessly. The LCD display requires minimal power, so it stays on all the time, but only "wakes up" once movement of the wheels is detected. You get to select your own acceptable high/low tire pressure (and temperature) limits per axle. A beeping alarm is sounded when pressures stray outside the parameters you've set, but can be quickly muted with a quick button press. The pressure sensor transmitters on the tire have standard CR flat batteries ,easily changeable on the spot, and supposedly last a year or more. I like the fact that the cockpit display requires NO power hookup wires (but one is provided in case you live in Alaska and have to survive the sunless winters)
I couldn't be more pleased with this sytem.. it is vastly superior to Porsche's OEM system, and if any component of the system fails, worst case is a full replacement unit at under $60. I find that reported pressures can be 1-2 degrees F different than I measure at the tire, but that's no different from the OEM's as well. And, I have noticed absolutely no adverse balance or handling issues with the slight additional weight at the valve stem.
I am so happy with this unit I now have similar units installed on 5 of my various vehicles and all have performed admirably so far (about 6 months). I even installed a set on my 22 ft travel trailer, and the transmitters are plenty strong to send signals to my tow vehicle's cockpit.
Many people say ("Don't trust the cheap TPMS units, buy the best"), and you can certainly spend well over $200 for "name brand" external systems with no additional functionality than this, so I don't see the rationale (and, worst case scenario, if a unit fails, just buy a complete new system for $55).

Hi Paul, thanks for your post. When I clicked on the link for "Enable/Disable
TPMS
with
Durametric Pro
", I get an error message that I'm not allowed to view the link ( I am a member). Could you re-send the link or post what it says?
Thanks

You might try contacting Paul directly - he hasn't been on the forum for 10 months, which is when he posted this writeup.
It's not a permissions problem - I clicked on the link and got the same message - and I have admin/moderator level access to anything on the forum. I'll poke around a bit and see if I can locate the post he was directing us to.
Thank you. I did come across a link on another forum that explains how to use a
durametric pro
to disable the
TPMS
