Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My last post Good OPC experience on 14th Oct relating to sorting out my headlight free of charge. I had agreed a price for two Pirelli 225/40/18 N4 for £298 which was reasonable and £200 for a full alignment and geometery check which normally costs £225. So I was expecting a bill for £498. I have had the work done today as above and also last night noticed the sidelight was not working so they changed the bulb as well. When my bill came to £427.44 I was more than happy. The breakdown of the bill was: Porsche alignment and geometery check £105 Supplied and fitted two Pirelli 225/40/18 N4 £246.80 Labour to fit the bulb £10.50 Sidelight bulb £1.48 V.A.T £63.66 Total £427.44 As you can see I paid £70.56 less than the agreed price and also effectively had free labour and free bulb. I am still not sure if they made a mistake with the bill or my comments about me being happy to use an OPC if the prices are fair,I have a good experience and do not feel ripped off. Also I stated that in the current climate Porsche should give a discount for older cars ,say 5 years and older to keep the workshop busy and keep the cars in the network. If people with older cars took them to OPC then they may part exchange or buy a new car. Although saying that they had a second hand car for sale the same year and spec as mine with less mileage for £15,000 more. The second hand prices seam the same as last year although I guess the deal will be better. Overall Im a happy chappy. Ian.

POST 2Original post

That's good. My OPC (Guildford) went ahead and replaced my front bulb (without checking) and charged me £70 for privilege (inc part, labour, VAT).

POST 3Original post

Hmmm... Should we really be considering that as a 'good' experience, as opposed to a merely satisfactory one? Tyres are slightly more expensive than from a tyre specialist (£290 for a pair of fronts is £30 more than I pay at my local tyre fitter), and the geo. is still a bit more than my local Indy charges me at £105. With regard to the sidelight bulb, I have always preached Carl Sewells philosophy to customer service, which is "don't charge a customer for anything you wouldn't charge a friend for": Would you charge a mate £12 to change a bulb?... :?: I know I wouldn't... I'm guessing that's about 5 mins labour time - and the likelihood is it was done by the first year apprentice, or a parts person: Neither of which are worth £130 per hour in my book (you can employ a half decent solicitor where I live for that money - not a spotty 17 year-old YTS trainee!) The worrying thing is that we are so used to OPCs cocking things up completely, or ripping us off, that a fairly average experience is now classified as outstanding service - just because nothing went wrong!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wattie, See your point. However the tyres actually cost me £246.80 and the OPC are careful with rims, that was cheaper than you pay by your local tyre place that normally have YTS fitters and dont care about rims. The bulb was changed by an experienced mechanic after he explained the alignment and geomerety results. My point was that the final bill was less than originally agreed by a fair margin and was no more than a indy and a lot cheaper than other OPCs. Thats why I thought it was a good experience, especially after forum views of some OPCs. Ian.
